    Good, but shows it's age

Started in 1996 and published in 2005, this book is very heavily focused on film photography, and several chapters assume the user has a film camera (perhaps using ISO 64 Kodachrome slide film or an APS point-and-shoot). Indeed, multiple claims about digital photography and slide scanning are horribly outdated. However, it serves as a good primer for both basic photography and how to think about photography in caves, and contains an introduction to several flash techniques which are still applicable to digital photography. The novice (myself included) would be well-served by pairing this with an introduction to digial raw processing and digital editing techniques. The specifics on lava tube, sea cave, commercial cave, underwater, stereo, and b+w photography, and thoughts on photography as an artform, cave photography ethics, and the NSS photo salon help to solidify this as an introductory text for many styles of low-light photographers, and as a glimpse into the state-of-the-art of cave photography at the turn of the millenium.
